Independent senator David Pocock says the bodies of Australian soldiers buried in Gaza have "very likely" been disturbed, after new photos presented to parliament showed widespread damage from Israeli bulldozers. Senate estimates heard that about 146 of the 263 Australian graves in the Gaza cemetery have been damaged.

Images tendered to estimates show damaged headstones and tonnes of earth pushed into high berms. Most of the graves are those of light horsemen from the first world war, but the southern corner of the cemetery — where Australians who died in the second world war are buried — has suffered the worst damage.

The Tuffah area of Gaza City has been shelled during the conflict, and more systematic bulldozing in April and May last year left hundreds of graves desecrated with earthen berms built across the site.
