Sesko stoppage-time winner gives Manchester United win over Fulham
Benjamin Sesko’s stoppage-time goal earned Manchester United a dramatic victory over Fulham at Old Trafford, the striker finishing in front of the Stretford End to seal the win. Three minutes earlier Kevin had curled an equaliser past Senne Lammens that appeared to have salvaged a point for the visitors, only for Bruno Fernandes to run down the right, cross, and for Sesko – on as a replacement – to convert late and spark wild celebration.
Interim manager Michael Carrick described the moment as emblematic of the club’s identity, saying: “It’s the best feeling, I have to say… There’s no better place, in front of the Stretford End.” It was the third notable strike of a breathless second half after Casemiro’s free-kick set-piece finish and Matheus Cunha’s strike following a no-look pass from Casemiro.
The game featured significant refereeing and VAR incidents. John Brooks denied and then awarded a penalty before the VAR overturned the spot-kick decision but gave a free-kick for an earlier infringement that led to Casemiro’s opener. Fulham later had Raúl Jiménez’s penalty after Harry Maguire fouled him, and James Bell’s VAR review ruled Samuel Chukwueze offside after a play that initially appeared to have given the visitors a goal.
Fulham manager Marco Silva criticised the officiating, calling some decisions “horrendous” and saying the VAR had effectively re-refereed calls.
