Shipping companies weigh in on IEEPA tariff refunds
If you bought goods from overseas in 2025 that required shipping, you may be owed an IEEPA tariff refund. The Supreme Court overturned the IEEPA tariffs and the Court of International Trade has ruled that all tariffs paid under IEEPA must be returned. Customs and Border Protection could begin rolling out refunds as soon as April after some system updates, and the CIT estimates about $165 billion is owed, with roughly $650 million accruing each month.
FedEx was the first carrier to file a lawsuit with the Court of International Trade seeking a full refund on behalf of customers. A FedEx spokesperson said the company intends to return tariff costs to shippers and consumers if refunds are issued to FedEx, but that timing and the request process will depend on future guidance from the government and the court.
UPS said it will support customers in obtaining refunds once a process is established by the relevant agencies.
