Choosing an XLR microphone usually means spending extra money on a mixer or audio interface that takes up desk space and dictates your PC's audio controls. For two years the simple alternative has been a small USB-to-XLR converter like Shure's MVX2U, which takes the XLR connection from your mic and lets you plug into a phone, laptop, or PC via USB-C with no physical faders or buttons.

Shure has refreshed that device as a fully digital audio interface while keeping the same physical size and layout—there’s still a 3.5mm headphone jack and a USB-C port. Most of the new functionality comes from the MotivMix app, which provides a virtual mixing table where you can drag and drop audio sources and control gain and effects on screen, aiming at creators who make content on the go.

The MVX2U Gen 2 gains Auto-Level mode, a real-time denoiser, and the digital popper stopper used in the MV6, along with familiar tools such as up to +60dB of gain, EQ settings, compressors, limiters and the ability to save preferred setups.
