Simo Cell and Abdullah Miniawy: Dying Is the Internet — voice amid chaos
Egyptian singer Abdullah Miniawy has spent the past decade lending his melismatic voice and Arabic classical maqam melodies to a wide range of experimental projects. He released the 2023 jazz-inflected album Le Cri du Caire with French trumpeter Erik Truffaz, pairs his vocals with sparse electronic atmospherics in an ongoing collaboration with German trio Carl Gari, and fronts a trio that features two trombones on baroque-inspired compositions.
Since 2020 Miniawy has worked on a heavier, dancefloor-focused collaboration with French producer Simo Cell. Their debut EP Kill Me Or Negotiate used snapping electronic percussion, thunderous trap bass and whispers of jazz horns; on Dying Is the Internet they delve into darker corners of digital production, theming eight tracks around the AI- and bot-related corruption of online life.
