Sunday’s 800th episode, “Irrational Treasure,” starts with Marge trying to get Santa’s Little Helper in shape and quickly detours into a Philadelphia trip and a National Treasure parody. Executive producer Mike Price said the idea came first—“When we first came up with this idea… we had no idea it was going to be the 800th episode”—and the team focused on “what’s the best story that we can tell?” rather than staging a milestone celebration.

The writers’ room became hooked on HBO’s The Pitt while shaping the story, and the veterinary ER sequence leaned into that obsession. Price said it “just made absolute sense” to parody the show, and the episode brings in Noah Wyle, Katherine LaNasa, and Taylor Dearden to voice the medical staff caring for the dog.

The episode balances absurdity with an emotional center: Marge’s relationship to the dog anchors the plot and culminates in her speech about the pain of losing a pet.
