Sinners and One Battle After Another Boost Oscars Cases as The Pitt Dominates
The 78th Writers Guild of America Awards were handed out Sunday evening, honoring writing across film, television, streaming, radio, news and advertising. The WGA has long been a bellwether for the Oscars, with the two events agreeing on seven of the last ten original screenplay awards and six of the last ten adapted screenplay awards.
Ongoing strikes prompted the WGA West to cancel its Los Angeles ceremony, but the WGA East proceeded in New York with Roy Wood Jr. hosting. On the film side, Sinners won Original Screenplay and One Battle After Another took Adapted Screenplay, keeping both films neck and neck in the Best Picture race.
Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest edged out Ryan Coogler’s horror darling in a run that helped both titles sweep much of the season’s major shows. Television favored The Pitt, which won New Series, Drama Series and the Episodic Drama award for the episode “7:00 A.M.,” becoming the clear winner of the night.
