'Sinners' Soars on Streaming After Historic Oscar Night
Following a historic Oscar night, Sinners has surged on HBO Max. Released in April 2025 and directed by Ryan Coogler, the horror film starring Michael B. Jordan won Best Actor, Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography and Best Original Score. It was the most nominated film in Academy Awards history with 16 nominations.
Less than 24 hours after its wins, Sinners is the second most popular movie on HBO Max in the United States, behind the new documentary Fukushima, and sits atop global streaming charts at number one, per Flix Patrol. Coogler won Best Original Screenplay but did not take Best Director.
He described the film as "the closest reflection of me and my life of anything I've made." With that win he became just the second Black creator to receive the Best Original Screenplay Oscar; Jordan Peele was the first for Get Out. Warner Bros. may have reason to consider a sequel, but Coogler has said he created Sinners as a complete, self-contained story.
