Andrew Fletcher, 27, left a corporate banking role in downtown Toronto after two years, despite earning 150,000 Canadian dollars a year at Scotiabank. The work felt repetitive, and he grew tired of an environment where people were always wishing away their time.

He quit his job in August and moved to Quezon province in the Philippines in October. He put his savings into starting a chicken farm on his partner’s family land, investing $100,000 in a plot now under construction while renting a smaller farm that holds about 15,000 chickens to learn the business.

There were almost no educational resources online, so he relied on two hired farm hands to show him the ropes. Chick care is a 24-hour responsibility: if a fan breaks or the power goes out for an hour, you could lose an entire cycle. The local business environment was a shock.
