Skeet Ulrich Nearly Ruined Scream With an Interview
While doing press junket rounds in 1996, Skeet Ulrich told Interview Magazine on a phone call, "I get to play this serial killer!" He realized the mistake after the call, called his publicist, and Interview Magazine later redacted the statements. Ulrich was especially busy that spring: The Craft and Last Dance opened May 3 and Boys opened May 10, while Scream was not due until December.
He was a rising star who had trained at the Atlantic Theater Company under David Mamet and William H. Macy. Scream’s power rests on surprise twists, and an early reveal could have undercut the franchise. The series went on to seven films, with Scream 7 released in 2026, and has surpassed $1 billion worldwide; the ghostface mask became an iconic Halloween costume and the films helped launch the careers of Neve Campbell, Matthew Lillard, David Arquette, Jamie Kennedy, and Skeet Ulrich.
Because the remarks were removed, the original film’s final reveal remained intact.
