Slay the Spire 2 shows Godot can power a breakout hit after Unity fallout
Slay the Spire 2 launched in early access and sold over three million copies in its first week. Mega Crit expects to spend one to two years building the game out before a full release, and some observers say it sometimes feels more like a remake than a sequel. A glance at the credits reveals the Godot logo, a reminder that Mega Crit switched engines after the 2023 Unity debacle.
The studio moved to Godot after two years of development; Unity later reversed its changes in a piecemeal fashion, but that backtracking failed to satisfy many developers. By the end of that autumn Unity's CEO was gone and much of the goodwill among indies had evaporated.
Mega Crit settled on Godot following an internal three-week game jam that produced a small deck-battler called Dancing Duellists, which is available for free on Windows, Mac and Linux.
