You never know what's going to happen with sequels to influential indies like Slay the Spire. I put about an hour into Slay the Spire 2 earlier today, and it immediately got its hooks in me; sometimes follow-ups get lost in a sea of imitators, but this one feels like it belongs.

It largely follows the same format and basic design while adding new enemies, cards, effects and artifacts. On my first run I carried an egg to a campsite to hatch it, and the reward was a special card plus a bird companion who hangs out during battles.

The biggest new feature is four-player co-op, which I haven't tested yet. Newzoo data shows the original reached a five-year high for monthly active users on Steam in January—658,000 across 37 markets—suggesting many players revisited the first game ahead of the sequel. Slay the Spire 2 is expected to remain in early access for one to two years, and Mega Crit says it already has more content than the original.
