Slay the Spire 2 rockets to Steam top; Mega Crit urges support for small indies
After a delay in late 2025, Slay the Spire 2 entered early access on March 5 and immediately climbed to the top of Steam's best-sellers, overtaking Marathon and Resident Evil: Requiem.
About 224,000 players are currently playing, and just under 6,000 Steam reviews average out to an "overwhelmingly positive" rating. Mega Crit has urged players not to treat its instant success as the be-all and end-all, adding a heart emoji to a tweet and clarifying to one player that the post was sarcastic rather than a dig; Marathon, which launched at the same time, is doing well in its own right.
Designer Giovannetti described the creative process as a kind of butchery, generating thousands of ideas and cutting most of them away. Mega Crit plans to keep the game in early access for one to two years "until the game feels great," adding "cards, events, environments, enemies, and more," while the Godot engine team suggested the release could be "the biggest Godot game release to date."
