Software engineers are getting crushed by AI
Software engineers are getting crushed by AI. The technology's ability to automate code is making developers both more productive and overworked; one technologist lamented that "AI fatigue" is real.
Software veteran Steve Yegge predicts AI will eventually lead Big Tech to cut 50% of their engineers. He also offered advice to avoid what he called the "vampiric effect" of AI.
Matt Shumer, the CEO of an AI startup, warned the disruption will be "much bigger" than COVID. His post drew more than 69 million views on X, and he said he used AI to help write it; his company builds AI personal assistants, so he benefits from getting people on board.
This disruption may not stop with engineers. Entry-level jobs, consultants, and the legal industry appear vulnerable, while engineers — who long enjoyed healthy salaries, good work-life balance, and strong job security — are suddenly feeling the change. At this point, we're all used to it.
