Goal reports Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is open to returning to Manchester United as a caretaker manager following Ruben Amorim's sacking, just over four years after he was dismissed by the club.

The club has Darren Fletcher leading the team in the immediate short term, but is expected to appoint someone to take charge for the coming months before a permanent appointment is made ahead of next season. Fabrizio Romano, via his YouTube channel, said Solskjaer would be "more than open" to a caretaker return; there is not thought to have been any contact from United at this time.

Solskjaer previously managed United from December 2018 until November 2021, leaving after a heavy defeat to Watford compounded a poor start to the 2021–22 season. In two full seasons he oversaw third- and second-place Premier League finishes, reached the semi-finals or better of five cup competitions, and recorded a 54.2% win rate, which the report compares with Erik ten Hag's 54.7%, Ruben Amorim's 38.1% and figures for David Moyes and Louis van Gaal.

United are reportedly drawing up a shortlist for an interim and a permanent manager: Darren Fletcher will lead for at least this week while names such as Michael Carrick have been linked to the temporary role, and Oliver Glasner and Enzo Maresca to a longer-term appointment ahead of the summer.
