Brad Reese, the inventor’s grandson, said he was upset after finding a bag of Valentine’s Day Reese’s Mini Hearts whose coating could not legally be called milk chocolate. He told LinkedIn he “had to actually throw it in the garbage,” adding, “That’s the first time in my life I’ve ever thrown a product of Reese’s out without consuming it.” An investigation on Thursday that involved buying a bag at a Manhattan drugstore and reading the ingredients found that foil-wrapped Reese’s Peanut Butter Eggs no longer list milk chocolate either.

The change follows recipe adjustments across the candy business as cocoa prices climbed, driven by drought, financial speculation and labor shortages, and as companies have replaced ingredients like cocoa butter with less-expensive substitutes. Mr.
