A low-budget action thriller that leans into 80s throwback sensibilities has opened in select U.S. theaters after a quiet festival run. Son of the Soil has been building momentum since appearing at several festivals last year and is now poised to reach a wider audience in North America.

Directed by Chee Keong Cheung, the film stars Razaaq Adoti as Zion Ladejo, a former soldier who returns home to investigate his sister’s murder and pursue a path of revenge. The cast also includes Patience Ozokwo, Ireti Doyle, Taye Arimoro, Sunshine Rosman, Damilola Ogunsi, Emeka Golden, Sharon Rotimi and newcomer Ijelu Folajimi.

Production companies on the project are Action Xtreme, Sovereign Films and Boxonia Blueprint, with Nile Entertainment and Aloha Releasing handling distribution. Critical reaction has been mixed but often highlights the film’s throwback energy.
