Sonos launches Play and Era 100 SL with modest upgrades
Sonos has introduced two new speakers, the Play and the Era 100 SL, continuing to expand its hardware after an earlier amp announcement. The Play creates a new portable tier between the Roam and the Move 2, while the Era 100 SL offers a lower-cost entry point into Sonos' smart speaker ecosystem.
The Play is portable and can join a home Wi‑Fi Sonos system or pair with a phone over Bluetooth for use away from home. It comes with a charging base for at-home use, is slightly smaller than the Move 2, and improves durability to an IP67 dust- and waterproof rating versus the Move 2's IP56.
Sonos equipped the Play with a proprietary Bluetooth-enabled grouping feature that works with Play and Move 2 speakers. On paper the Play uses three Class-H amplifiers, two tweeters, one midwoofer and two passive radiators, which suggests a more bass-heavy profile that won’t be as loud or present as the Move 2; the passive radiators should boost low-frequency output outdoors.
