Sony Pulls Back From PC Ports as Xbox’s Next Console Remains Unclear
Last week brought word that Sony has lost interest in porting its games to PC and plans to corral PlayStation exclusives back onto its own consoles. On Xbox’s side, new CEO Asha Sharma revealed that the next console, Project Helix, is in development; so far the only firm promise is that it will serve as a home for Xbox and PC gaming.
The industry shifted away from platform-exclusive blockbusters as big-budget titles sought wider audiences. Game streaming, and Game Pass in particular, surged during COVID but has since hit a ceiling, leaving Xbox’s “everywhere” strategy to strain software and hardware performance and contributing to confusion around devices like the ROG Ally.
Sony still sells hardware well—the PS5 continues to move units—and ports to PC were an attempt to soften rising development costs and longer production cycles. Those ports generally underperformed on wider platforms, with Helldivers 2 the notable exception after a simultaneous console-and-PC launch.
