Spain and Portugal hit by third deadly storm in two weeks
Storm Marta passed over the Iberian peninsula on Saturday, bringing fresh torrential rain and killing two people. It follows Storm Kristin, which made landfall on 28 January and killed at least five people, and Storm Leonardo, which claimed another victim last Wednesday.
The outlook for this week calls for more rain across Spain, Portugal and France, with north‑west Portugal possibly seeing more than 100mm during the first half of the week. Some of the heaviest rain will move to southern Italy and western parts of Greece and Turkey later in the week.
High rainfall totals are also expected across parts of South Africa and Lesotho, with provinces including the Free State, KwaZulu‑Natal and Eastern Cape possibly recording widespread totals of 80–100mm by Saturday and daily totals reaching 50mm where storms are intense.
