Swiss prosecutors say sparkler candles placed on top of champagne bottles are the likely cause of the devastating fire that tore through the Constellation bar in Crans‑Montana in the early hours of New Year’s Day. At least 40 people were killed and a further 119 injured. Severe burns are hampering identification of victims, and authorities say DNA tests may be needed and could take weeks.

Valais attorney general Beatrice Pilloud said investigators were also examining whether a foam‑like ceiling covering helped the blaze spread. A retired firefighter reviewing images suggested the material may have been highly flammable polyurethane. Questions remain about the bar’s safety arrangements and whether emergency exits were accessible; the owners were interviewed as witnesses.

Among the missing is Charlotte Niddam, who previously attended Immanuel College in Hertfordshire and had been working as a babysitter in the resort, authorities say. Italian golf prospect Emanuele Galeppini, 17, has been confirmed dead. Other young people reported missing include 16‑year‑old Arthur Brodard, 15‑year‑old Alice Kallergis and Emilie Pralong, according to family statements and social media posts.

Relatives and friends described scenes of confusion as the blaze spread after a bottle with a sparkler was lit. Officials said 22 young patients are in critical condition at Lausanne University Hospital.
