Steven Spielberg has sometimes paired a big commercial picture with a more serious drama in the same year: in 1993 he released Jurassic Park and Schindler's List, and in 2005 he followed the sci-fi blockbuster War of the Worlds with the political thriller Munich.

Munich follows a group of Israeli agents on a revenge mission against the perpetrators and facilitators of the attack on Israeli athletes during the Munich Olympics in 1972. The film stars Eric Bana alongside a pre-James Bond Daniel Craig, Mathieu Kassovitz, Ciarán Hinds and Geoffrey Rush.

Released to critical acclaim in December 2005, Munich holds a "Certified Fresh" 79% on Rotten Tomatoes; the site’s consensus reads, "Munich can't quite achieve its lofty goals, but this thrilling, politically even-handed look at the fallout from an intractable political conflict is still well worth watching." Produced on a reported $70 million budget, it grossed more than $130 million worldwide and received five Oscar nominations.
