Star Trek: Starfleet Academy set out to refresh the franchise by following young adults at Starfleet Academy. After an exposition-heavy pilot, showrunners found a strong device in using classes to frame character stories, but the back half of the season slid in quality.

Episode 6’s shift to the schemes of Nus Braka reduced time for character work, leaving many plotlines feeling rushed. Caleb Mir’s arc was the season’s centerpiece: a personal connection to Nus through his mother Anisha drives his enrollment at the Academy and, by season’s end, he reunites with her but chooses to stay in school.

That trajectory is satisfying if predictable, and he faces few consequences for reckless behavior — Grade: B. SAM, the Kasquian holographic emissary, begins as bright and curious and grapples with limits and mentorship; after a time-jump story she returns subdued and with less new depth — Grade: C.
