Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is heading toward a planned fifth and final season, and the creative team has proposed a follow-up series, Star Trek: Year One, which would track Captain Kirk as the Enterprise’s new captain and introduce earlier versions of familiar crewmembers such as Spock, Uhura, Nurse Chapel and Scotty.

Co-showrunner Henry Alonso Myers told TrekMovie at the Saturn Awards that the writers have formally pitched Year One to Paramount and that the project is now in the studio’s hands. He added that the sets for Strange New Worlds remain intact, a detail that could affect the feasibility of a spin-off.

The survival of those sets matters because tearing them down previously increased costs and stalled other spinoff efforts. Myers said the studio’s choice about whether to keep the existing production infrastructure will be a key factor in deciding Year One’s future.
