Star Wars Galaxies gets major updates 15 years after shutdown
Non-profit communities often keep old MMOs alive, and Star Wars Galaxies is a striking example. A private Restoration server has been delivering large-scale updates for years, the latest of which, Shatterpoint, throws the galaxy into a cyclical civil war between the Empire and the Rebellion.
Shatterpoint sees either faction try to claim a majority of seven planets, each reached when a faction accumulates one million control points. The conflict unfolds on multiple fronts, so players in social professions can still influence the outcome by gathering intel or funneling false information to disrupt the enemy.
The update even notes that "The Empire will see a planet with a full Counterintel meter as a valuable target, and will likely select that planet over one that the Rebellion is actually aiming for." A new Mercenaries faction rewards players who defend whichever side is behind, and when one side holds four of the seven planets a final Shatterpoint battle occurs on the last claimed world.
