In cozy gaming circles, Stardew Valley has become the go-to recommendation the way The Hobbit is for new fantasy readers. The game is officially 10 years old this week, and it still serves as the default entry point for newcomers and returnees alike, despite its overnight success at launch in 2016 not making that outcome inevitable.

I remember putting hours into H1Z1 around the same time, a game that was later supplanted by Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds and Fortnite. As more titles inspired by Stardew appeared, it felt possible that another indie farm sim or a modernized Story of Seasons could overtake it, but that hasn’t happened.

There are other warm, competent farm-life sims—Roots of Pacha and Fields of Mistria stand out—but none have claimed Stardew’s place as the default. Even as more Story of Seasons and Harvest Moon entries arrive on PC, they haven’t quite modernized enough to displace it.
