Composer Inon Zur, known for his Bethesda themes for Fallout 3, 4, New Vegas and Starfield, defended the game and praised its director. Zur called Todd Howard "one of, if not the, the most creative and invigorating human beings in the industry," saying "he just doesn't stop" and that Howard "always has new ideas." The game released in 2023 but hasn't picked up the audience love or modding scene of Bethesda's other titles.

Over 83,000 Steam user reviews return the verdict of "mixed", and PC Gamer awarded it 75% at launch. Zur described composing Starfield's score as shaping a vast, still void that contains rapid, zooming elements. "There was a lot of thinking that we did and I was basically taking back into this world," he said, noting woodwinds play "everlasting fast movements" while brass and strings provide slow, low ambience and very high notes together to convey scale.

He added the music also explores the contrast between space's enormity and "the person" within it: "It's you. It's me.
