Steven Colbert's Digital Dean has been narrating an off-screen subplot about Specialist Krebs' Talaxian Furfly, a running gag that blends Voyager echoes with clear nods to The Original Series. The Dean's updates—about the Furfly trying to mate with a beaker, eating its own fur, and attacking a Science Lab 7 technician—have all been conveyed over the speaker rather than shown directly.

In "300th Night" the Dean drops the crucial detail: the Furfly has escaped into the ship's replicator system. Rather than reproducing the way Tribbles did, this Furfly looks set to be multiplied by technology, creating an oncoming swarm that functions as a modern riff on the earlier story.
