Starfleet Academy offers Star Trek a unique way forward

Starfleet Academy's first season ended serviceably, with many of its strongest moments coming earlier in the run. Reception was mixed, yet Season 2 has already wrapped and is expected to arrive in 2027. Whether the Paramount+ series continues beyond that remains unclear, but the show presents a shape of the franchise that feels worth exploring further.

The series leans into a largely untold stretch of Star Trek history. After Discovery carried its cast into the 32nd century, much of that era remained unexplored beyond the Burn and its aftermath. Starfleet Academy positions its characters on the cusp of a new century: a late-season flashforward shows Caleb Mir and his classmates graduating in 3196, leaving room to move the story into the opening years of the 33rd century.

No other recent Star Trek series has followed characters from their cadet years into extended active service. Lower Decks came close but skipped training and stops before characters rise to senior ranks.
