State Fiscal Chiefs Protest Federal Immigration Enforcement
Democratic state treasurers, auditors and comptrollers from multiple states sent a letter to the president saying federal immigration enforcement tactics are hurting local businesses and tax revenues and urging a halt. Officials pointed to recent operations in Minnesota, where customers and workers have stayed away from streets and establishments out of fear.
The letter, organized by For the Long Term, argued that enforcement actions can depress sales and income tax collections and impose fiscal costs on states that already send more to Washington than they receive. State fiscal officers noted that they rarely act collectively on law enforcement matters but felt the issue crossed into their role as stewards of public budgets.
Officials warned of broader consequences if immigrant labor and community participation decline, saying budgets could tighten and long-term tax bases suffer.
