When crisis intrudes into everyday lives, personal worlds shrink and important events are reduced to near irrelevance. Sheffield Wednesday supporters have endured so much misery that Sunday’s potential relegation-sealing Steel City derby has lost some of its old significance.

“If you win it’ll be like kicking a cat,” Dan Fudge tells Nick Wylie on this week’s podcast. “We’ve got bigger things to worry about than bragging rights.” On the pitch, form has been dire. A recent podcast title summed it up: “We scored a goal,” referring to Wednesday’s first goal in 11 games, scored in a 2-1 defeat at Millwall that was their 10th consecutive loss.

Their last Championship point came on 29 December in a goalless draw with Blackburn; the season’s only league win was 2-0 at Portsmouth in September. Off the field, the club were docked 12 points for entering administration after Dejphon Chansiri agreed to sell in October and a further six points in December for late wage payments, leaving them bottom of the Championship on minus seven points.
