Stephen King’s work has been adapted into countless films, and some entries have quietly slipped out of the spotlight. One of those is 1408, a tense, psychological take on a King short story first published in 1999. Directed by Mikael Håfström and written by Matt Greenberg, Scott Alexander, and Larry Karaszewski, the film stars John Cusack and Samuel L.

Jackson. It follows Mike Enslin, an author who makes a living debunking the supernatural, until he ignores warnings and spends a night in the Dolphin Hotel’s infamous room. Released in 2007 with a runtime of 112 minutes, 1408 was a box-office success, turning a reported $22.5 million budget into a global haul of $131 million.

Critics were generally positive, with an 80% score from 177 submissions on Rotten Tomatoes and a 61% audience score from more than 250,000 votes; reviewers highlighted the film’s reliance on psychological tension over overt gore and Cusack’s strong leading performance.
