Stephen King adaptations often either stick the landing or fade away. The past year saw many King projects on screen, including Glen Powell’s The Running Man reboot, Tom Hiddleston’s Life of Chuck, James Wan’s The Monkey, and the IT extension Welcome to Derry on TV.

Nikolaj Arcel’s The Dark Tower stars Idris Elba as the last Gunslinger, Roland Deschain, and Matthew McConaughey as the Man in Black. The film condenses King’s multibook saga into a 95-minute story about Roland teaming with a young Jake to stop an evil sorcerer from destroying a reality-stabilizing tower.

Released August 4, 2017, the movie earned $113 million worldwide on a budget of about $66 million but fell short of expectations, receiving a 66 percent Rotten Tomatoes rating. The Dark Tower is now available on Tubi for free.
