Storm Goretti prompts nationwide ice warnings and rail travel alerts
Independent.co reports that a rail company has issued an adverse weather travel alert as yellow ice warnings cover almost all of Britain ahead of Storm Goretti. Yellow weather warnings for ice affecting England, Wales and Northern Ireland are in place until 11am on Wednesday, while Scotland’s snow and ice alert will last until midnight.
LNER listed 24 travel disruptions and said passengers 'should NOT TRAVEL between Edinburgh and Aberdeen' as trains may be 'delayed, cancelled or altered at short notice and/or experience overcrowding'; Network Rail said the line north of Edinburgh has reopened. ScotRail has cancelled services north of Lairg and the entire Inverness–Kyle of Lochalsh line because of heavy drifting snow, and LNER said it could not guarantee services would run until 'Friday 9 January at the earliest'.
The Met Office warned the cold snap will continue before a deep area of low pressure brings further snow, strong winds and heavy rain to southern parts of the UK from Thursday night. Eurostar has warned of likely 'severe delays' and last-minute cancellations, and disruption at Amsterdam Schiphol has led to more than 350,000 passengers having flights cancelled; KLM warned it could run out of de-icing fluid.
