Stranded Driver Killed After Being Hit While Waiting for Officer to Bring Gas
A driver on Interstate 35 in Texas who had run out of gas was struck and killed while waiting for a police officer to bring fuel, authorities said.
Officials said the Hillsboro Department of Public Safety received a call on Feb. 2 at about 5 a.m. local time about a stranded motorist on the southbound shoulder near the 369-mile marker. An officer spoke with the driver and offered to purchase gas, then left the scene to get fuel.
When the officer returned with the gas, they found the driver had been struck by a vehicle. Emergency services were called, life-saving measures were administered, and Hillsboro DPS Fire Rescue transported the subject to Hill Regional Medical Center where the subject later succumbed to their injuries; next of kin were notified.
The department said the cause of the incident remains under investigation. No arrests or charges have been announced, and anyone with information is asked to contact Hillsboro DPS’s Criminal Investigations Division.
