Super Mario Galaxy Movie adds overlooked villain Wart

Nintendo will hold a Direct on Monday, March 9 — Mario Day Eve — to reveal the final trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Ahead of that showcase, the company released a full poster on Friday that confirms a surprise, long-overlooked villain: Wart. Wart is the main antagonist of Super Mario Bros.

2, a massive toad that belches deadly bubbles and is deathly allergic to fruits and vegetables. He was originally known as Mamu in the Famicom game Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic, the title upon which Super Mario Bros. 2 was based. His later appearances have been sparse, mostly cameos in The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, remixes of Super Mario Bros.

2, a Spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and roles in various comics and manga. For many fans, Wart has long felt like an under-used foil while Nintendo has repeatedly relied on Bowser as the franchise’s ultimate villain. Wart’s inclusion fits the film’s sprawling ensemble, which also brings in Super Mario Bros.
