People reports that 27-year-old Andre de Ruyter was bitten by a shark while surfing at North Steyne Beach in Manly on Monday, Jan. 19. He was pulled from the water by members of the public who commenced first aid before emergency services arrived, treated for serious leg injuries by NSW Ambulance paramedics and taken to Royal North Shore Hospital in critical condition; he is one of four victims of shark attacks along the New South Wales coast this month.

Two fellow surfers, Ash and Eduardo, told 10 News they heard de Ruyter screaming and saw him trying to shake the shark from his right leg. Ash recalled, “He’s just going ‘Shark! Shark! Shark! Shark!’ ” and later quoted de Ruyter shouting, “No joke, no joke! It’s biting me, it’s biting me!

It’s eating me, it’s eating me! It’s killing me!” The pair used their surfboards to bring him slowly back to shore; Sarah Lally, a volunteer surf lifesaver, applied a tourniquet, began CPR and administered oxygen, and a nearby trauma doctor helped prepare him for a transfusion. On Jan.
