Nintendo rolled out Handheld Boost Mode earlier this week. The feature runs Switch 1 games as if they were docked even while the console is in handheld mode, and the visual improvements are immediately noticeable — but it comes at a steep battery cost. One owner tested the difference using the Switch port of Doom Eternal.

Reddit user JampyL started at full charge and recorded just over five hours in regular handheld mode, but only three hours and 43 minutes with boost mode enabled, a 23 percent drop in battery life. Many players say the trade-off is worth it for improved resolution, anti-aliasing and overall clarity, especially on titles that were compromised on the original hardware.

Comparisons for games such as Paper Mario TTYD, Astral Chain and Minecraft show clear gains, and even rougher ports like The Witcher 3 and The Outer Worlds look noticeably better; Xenoblade Chronicles 2 was singled out as an example of how much handheld performance could suffer on the older system.
