Taliesin Jaffe: Brennan Lee Mulligan 'Weaponizes' Characters

At a panel moderated by Maggie Lovitt at Awesome Con, Taliesin Jaffe described playing Campaign 4 under Brennan Lee Mulligan as noticeably different from previous Critical Role campaigns. Jaffe said Mulligan “has a way of weaponizing your character build on a level that I was not prepared for,” explaining that Mulligan often takes what players say they want and pushes those ideas to difficult or unexpected extremes.

“If you tell him what you want, he will give it to you in the worst possible way.” The contrast with Matthew Mercer’s approach was clear in Jaffe’s remarks. Mulligan is known for turning backstories, motivations and emotional goals into the foundation for major conflicts, bringing intensity, rapid emotional escalation and a willingness to directly challenge characters through their flaws and ambitions.

Jaffe added that understanding Mulligan’s style influenced how he built his Campaign 4 character.
