Teens sentenced for 2022 apartment fire that killed mother and daughter
Two teens received the maximum seven-year sentence in the Colorado Department of Human Services Division of Youth Services for their roles in a 2022 apartment fire that killed a mother and her daughter. Authorities said the youths were 14 and 12 at the time; their names were not disclosed because they are minors.
According to the First Judicial District Attorney's Office, the pair had been asked to leave a friend's apartment at the Tiffany Square Apartments and returned just before 4 a.m., setting a bush on fire outside. Surveillance footage captured them running away as flames grew and later using public transportation to leave the scene.
Kathleen Payton, 31, and her 10-year-old daughter, Jazmine Payton-Aguayo, were trapped and died of carbon monoxide poisoning and smoke inhalation; ten others were injured and every surviving resident of the 32-unit complex was displaced. Both teens have remained in custody since the Oct.
