Ten Vietnam War Films Considered More Devastating Than 'Apocalypse Now'

Apocalypse Now is widely regarded as the greatest Vietnam War film. Loosely adapted from Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness and relocated to 20th-century Asia, Francis Ford Coppola’s tense, gorgeous picture was nominated for eight Oscars, winning Best Cinematography and Best Sound.

Still, several other films tackle the conflict’s brutality in different, often harsher, ways. Hamburger Hill zeroes in on the brutal fight for Hill 937 during Operation Apache Snow, emphasizing carnage and the futility of taking a position later abandoned by superiors; the film, loved by veterans, foregrounds violence over plot and features Don Cheadle and Dylan McDermott.
