Terrence Howard said on the PBD Podcast that a 2007 encounter with producer Joel Silver at the Venice Film Festival sparked a dispute over billing for The Brave One. Silver told him his name would not be above the title because Jodie Foster was the star and suggested any Oscar nod would be for Supporting Actor.

Howard says he replied that if Silver spoke to him that way again he would "knock your teeth out of your mouth." Susan Downey, Silver's producing partner on The Brave One, is married to Robert Downey Jr., who had worked with Howard on Iron Man. Howard notes that eight months after the confrontation he was removed from Iron Man 2 and has suggested those events may have played a part.

He previously accused Robert Downey Jr. in 2013 of taking money meant for him and pushing him out, saying he tried to contact Downey Jr. and didn't hear back for three years. On Oct. 14, 2008 it was reported that Howard was replaced by Don Cheadle after Jon Favreau signed on to return as director.
