The American President is streaming on Netflix in the US for a limited time. Roger Ebert awarded the film four out of four stars and, with Gene Siskel on At the Movies, gave it two thumbs up.

Directed by Rob Reiner and written by Aaron Sorkin, the film follows widowed Democratic President Andrew Shepherd (Michael Douglas) as he falls for environmental lobbyist Sydney Ellen Wade. Ebert highlighted how the movie combines political drama, comedy and romance while handling real issues such as gun control and the environment.

The film grossed $108 million worldwide, received multiple Golden Globe nominations and an Oscar nod for Best Original Musical or Comedy Score, and was ranked #75 on the American Film Institute’s list of America’s Greatest Love Stories in 2002. Robert Redford originally conceived the project and planned to star before stepping away; Douglas was cast in the lead. It’s available on Netflix in the US for now, but won’t be there forever.
