Released for PlayStation 2 in March 2001, The Bouncer was developed by DreamFactory and published by Square Electronic Arts in North America. The beat ’em up follows barworkers Sion, Kou, and Volt as they try to rescue Dominique from the Mikado Corporation, and unfolds in Edge, a neon-spangled city that recalls Wall Market and Coruscant’s underbelly.

Veteran designers helmed the project: Takashi Tokita (Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 4, Parasite Eve) co-directed, and Seichii Ichii—who helped design Virtua Fighter and directed Tekken and Tekken 2—served as co-director. Tetsuya Nomura provided the character designs, and reviewers praised the game’s cutscenes and distinctive Y2K fashions, from Kou’s tribal tattoos to leather-clad villains with a prominent whale tail.

Critics found the gameplay lacking. A finicky input scheme, aggressive ragdoll physics and very short levels left combat unsatisfying; cutscenes made up roughly two‑thirds of the game’s runtime, so skipping cinematics could reduce playtime to 30–45 minutes.
