‘The Bride!’ Ends Warner Bros.’ Nine-Film Streak After Divisive Reviews
This weekend the domestic box office presents contrasting fortunes: Pixar’s Hoppers is projected to open around $40 million, the biggest debut for an original Pixar film since Coco in 2017, buoyed by near-unanimous critical praise. The studio’s recent originals have underperformed, contributing to layoffs, so Hoppers’ strong start marks a notable rebound.
Warner Bros., by contrast, looks set to see its nine-film hot streak come to an end with The Bride!, a period crime saga that opened to divided reviews. The studio has earned attention this past year for backing original films such as Sinners, One Battle After Another and Weapons, and last year released big franchises including A Minecraft Movie, The Conjuring: Last Rites, Final Destination Bloodlines and Superman.
Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights also continued the studio’s run, topping $200 million worldwide against a reported $80 million budget. The Bride! cost a reported $90 million and was inspired by the 1935 film Bride of Frankenstein.
