The Bride! arrived in theaters with a high-profile cast and Maggie Gyllenhaal directing her second feature after The Lost Daughter, but critics and audiences were split. Some reviewers praised its brazen tone while others compared it unfavorably to Joker: Folie à Deux, a film that grossed $206 million worldwide on a reported $200 million budget and became a notable box office disappointment.

The Bride! brought in around $7 million domestically and less than $15 million worldwide in its opening weekend, well under projections and a fraction of its reported $90 million budget. It finished the weekend at under half its expected opening and will be lucky to gross even $100 million in its lifetime worldwide run.

Adapted from the 1935 Bride of Frankenstein and incorporating Mary Shelley as a character, the film stars Jessie Buckley as both Shelley and an abused woman reanimated to satisfy Frankenstein's monster, played by Christian Bale.
