Maggie Gyllenhaal’s new film The Bride! has landed a divisive 60% on Rotten Tomatoes, making it technically "fresh," if only just. The punk rock horror romance, which Gyllenhaal wrote and directed after her well-received debut The Lost Daughter, is splitting critics over whether its big swings land.

The Bride! stars Jessie Buckley as a woman who is killed in 1930s Chicago and brought back to life to be a companion for Frankenstein’s monster, known here as Frank (Christian Bale). The pair embark on a Bonnie and Clyde–style rampage, with the Bride spurring a countrywide feminist revolution, and the cast also includes Annette Bening, Peter Sarsgaard, Penélope Cruz and Jake Gyllenhaal.

Opinions range from enthusiastic to scathing.
