The Exorcist: Believer Becomes a Quiet Netflix Hit
The Exorcist: Believer, released in 2023, opened to toxic reviews and an underwhelming box office. Plans for two follow-up films were shelved after the movie earned a 22% Rotten Tomatoes score and failed to meet studio expectations. Universal had reportedly spent $400 million to secure distribution rights for the property, but the film grossed less than $140 million worldwide against a reported $30 million budget.
A 58% drop in its second weekend further dimmed hopes for a rebound. David Gordon Green directed Believer after rebooting the Halloween series, a trilogy that still managed nearly $500 million in combined worldwide grosses. The film also brought back Ellen Burstyn and Linda Blair from the original 1973 picture.
Despite its reputation, Believer has become one of the most-watched movies on the global Netflix charts this week, a list topped by Ridley Scott's Prometheus.
