Revisiting Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale in 2026 feels harder to watch — not because the storytelling has dulled, but because the world has changed so drastically since the series premiered in 2017. As the show reaches its endpoint, returning to it now reveals it as more than a continuation of what followed its release.

Set in the Republic of Gilead, the theocratic regime strips women of rights: they cannot work, own property, control money, or read, and those who can bear children are forced into a caste of Handmaids whose sole purpose is to give birth for powerful families. The series follows June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss), captured while fleeing with her husband and daughter, who becomes Offred, a Handmaid to Commander Fred Waterford and his wife Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski).
