The Last Man on Earth: A Four-Season Post-Apocalyptic Sitcom
The Last Man on Earth is a FOX sitcom that ran from 2015 to 2018 and is now available to stream on Hulu. The series spans four seasons and 67 episodes, centering on Phil Miller (Will Forte), who appears to be the lone survivor after a deadly virus leaves the world largely empty.
His solitary life changes when he meets Carol Pilbasian (Kristen Schaal), and the two eventually marry and raise children before joining a larger group of survivors. Rather than dwelling on how the virus happened, the show mines the absurd possibilities of life without rules or crowds.
Its comic tone turns familiar post-apocalyptic beats into absurd set pieces, from Phil’s recurring “Oh, farts” exclamations to an early scene in which he talks to painted balls in place of human company. The ensemble cast includes January Jones, Mary Steenburgen, Mel Rodriguez, and Cleopatra Coleman, with memorable guest turns by Jason Sudeikis, Kristen Wiig, Fred Armisen and cameos from Will Ferrell, Laura Dern and Jon Hamm.
